About me:
My name is Cathy. From San Antonio, Texas. I have two sons, Ryan 22 who is graduating from bc on 10-3-08-I will be there, can't wait to see him. I also have Riley who is 7. Ryan will be going to sub school in Groton after bc. I am not really sure of all the particulars but....I am so proud of him and can't wait to see him soon.
My child's FIRST name only (No Last Names Please!):
Ryan
My son/daughter is:
Enlisted
I was the proudest of my child when:
I have and always will be proud of Ryan....but I think seeing him after 8 weeks and PIR will be something else!!! Kleenex for sure!!!
When my son/daughter first spoke about joining the service I:
Was confused, Was proud, Encouraged him/her
As a new Navy mom, the most important thing I learned was:
Be supportive, I am not sure I have learned everything yet....we have just started this "adventure" and I thank God that I found Navy Moms....it has helped so much...wish I would have found it sooner!!!!
My son/daughter is currently in the service or retired, and now I believe:
Our relationship has grown stronger, The Navy has a lot to offer, This was the best decision he/she could have made

I think this is a lot harder than boot camp (at least we knew it would end and we'd get to see them.) Here's how freaked out I was - (I didn't want to broadcast this on the entire Groton group) This past Monday I broke down (mostly metaphorically speaking!) and called the base! After only two phone calls, I got his chief on his cell and I explained that I hadn't heard from C. and he put the boy on the phone! I know I upset C. a bit cause I was already past upset. He claimed he'd tried to call and couldn't get through and wants to call. I haven't used my home phone for a week hoping he'd call! (I'm way out in the country and my cell doesn't work well.) Anyway they're very busy, they're still in what we'd call "p" days and the pay phones are crappy- yada, yada and he will call me when he can. They didn't have addresses yet. Now I feel really bad for upsetting him. Is there no happy, middle ground? Yes, I know there will be. I have to give the Chief at sub school huge "props" as the kids say and thanks, cause he was very understanding and kind - said he had two kids, 18 and 20, and knows the nature of the beast! I'm relieved and feel even better about what good Navy hands our children are in.
Of course when he "needed" his stuff, he figured out how to call! He's still 18, although wonderfully changed. He really likes Groton so far. What job will your son prepare for after BESS (basic enlisted submarine school)?Take care.

Cathy, I believe our sons left for Connecticut together.. He said there was only 8 or 10 of them that got accepted into the program. What is his rate? Aaron said that they won't be assigned their firm rates until midway point of schooling. I didn't get a I'm here call from CT, just the I"M leaving GL mom call. Do you know how long this is for? And did they tell you where they are going after? Take Care

hey Cathy, I am right up there with you about leaving GL was harder than the first time... my husband has been in Groton since September 16th. His BESS is supposed to be over on nov 7th [atleast thats what he is telling me] I didnt get a call as soon as he got there, he couldnt call from the airport b/c h was really busy he said.. he had to check into housing and all that fun stuff, lol. however later on that night he called me form his room mates cell phone.. He got his address the following week as he got there on a tuesday.. Ummm... I was able to Fed ex his cell and things to him when I got his address... they give the a "emergency" address for medications and things to be sent in the first week, however he said NOT to send his cell laptop and things to that address b/c he said that they can get lost really easy for that one, sine it isn't his direct mailing address. I woudl reccomend waiting on the exact address in the following week.. I am on my way to CT in 6 days so i'll tell you how it is up there =] there are most ppl saying its nice, and another one saying its not nice at all. I'll find out for sure! haha. talk to u soon =]

Cathy,
I wish we had known we were sitting so close on the plane leaving Chicago, we could have gotten to know each other better. I believe I told you my oldest is on the large "boomer" subs and has been in the Navy for 15 years. He is a chief now stationed in Bangor, WA. Wasn't PIR awesome??!! Talk to you again soon.

I know what you mean. My son is probably one of the youngest. He'll turn 19 on Oct. 18th. I've gotta get busy too, but I'm excited to get to talk to you. I'll get back soon. Thanks for replying. Have a great day

Hi Cathy, our sons are in the same division and same ship. We live about 100 miles north of Dallas, in Roxton TX. I know you are excited about PIR. We are too. So exciting for such a big day.
