About me:

My son just graduated from his A school in Groton, CT and is home for 10 days before he goes to his permanent duty station in Pearl Harbor Hawaii. He will be on the USS Columbia. He is 3rd generation NAVY and completely dedicated to this part of his life. He is my only child and I am having a tough time adjusting to his being gone, but look forward to planning a trip to Hawaii to visit him. I am extremely proud of him and the course he has picked for his life. I am a school teacher in a very small school district in the Adirondack Mountains, we have 180 kids in the whole school, grades K-12. Our whole school is contained in one building and the kindergarten kids ride the bus to school with the seniors. My husband and I are empty nesters now, my son was the last one home so it is just us and the dog and cat now. I love the Adirondacks although I could do without the snow each winter. We hope to retire south in a few years to get away from the winters and the cold. We have a 32 foot 5th wheel trailer and we love to travel whenever we can. I love to cook and garden and my ideal summer vacation, involves the sun, a pool, a cold glass of wine and a good book.

My child's FIRST name only (No Last Names Please!):
Bob
My son/daughter is:
Enlisted
I was the proudest of my child when:
I was proudest of my child when he graduated from Basic Training. The pomp and circumstance made me proud to be an American and proud of the choice my son had made to protect and defend our country. I sent the Navy my son and they gave me back a man I am proud to call my son.
When my son/daughter first spoke about joining the service I:
Needed to learn more about it, Was proud, Encouraged him/her
As a new Navy mom, the most important thing I learned was:
That my son will grow up fast and may not need me as much as he did before, but that he has taken everything that I have tried to teach him and he will put it to good use. The letting go is hard, but what he accomplishes is what makes me proud. I gave the Navy my son and they gave me back a man that I am immensely proud of.

My son/daughter is currently in the service or retired, and now I believe:
Our relationship has grown stronger, This was a maturing experience, This was the best decision he/she could have made

He left today!

Well for those of you that don't like weepy, dewey eyed posts, this isn't going to be one that you'll want to read. For those of you whose broad shoulders I have leaned on in the past, I need you again today. My son left today for his permanent duty station in Hawaii, and it has bee… Continue

A school Graduation

Well, this should have been posted one week ago, and I guess I have no other excuse other than I have been busy (working) and enjoying the time with my son before he leaves for his permanent duty station in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, aboard the USS Columbia. Bob's graduation was Thursda… Continue

Orders have been received!

I haven't posted a blog in a while, and I have enjoyed coming home from work each day and reading that day's postings and adding a word where I could, to help where could, and to lend an ear so to speak where I could. I guess now it is my time to look for the soft comforting shoulders of my N4M friends and please bear with my rambling as I get this all straight in my head. My son Bob, is finishing his schooling in New London/Groton, CT. I always knew that the day would come when he would get his… Continue

On your movie maker you can click on show storyboard, then in the title overlay you can move it back and forth( thats for your picture titles).or to have the picture show longer you can move that time at the video line. Sorry I didnt get back sooner. been looking for a job and taken care of chickens!!!

Hi Barb! Saw your response on one of the boards. Also fellow barkeater here, but sadly haven't returned to the Adirondacks since my husband's retirement from the Navy. Glad to meet you!

My husband and sons belong to a trail riders club near Amsterdam. They go there quite often. I am so sorry you missed the NY event. I would have loved to have met you in person but most importantly you need to be with your son. There's alway the next NY meet & greet. A couple of the NY moms who were at NYC have organized one on Sept. 6th which I can't attend but they will be organizing future ones. How has Bob adjusted to Hawaii?

Barb K: How did I miss that you were from NY. Where abouts? I'm about 20 minutes south of Albany.

Hello Barb K thanks for the comment!!!! I used the software Windows Movie Maker. Its on most if not all computers when you buy them. Its a fairly easy program to get around.

Barb K: You are right. Tattoos are carefully documented by the recruiter, again at RTC and need approval for location and content. For the most part, they aren't a problem and are well documented throughout sailor history. My son has considered getting a miniature version of one his father has (which is a dragon, full lower arm, elbow to wrist) on his upper arm. As far as I know he hasn't done it yet but if he does I think that would be a nice tribute to his Dad.

hey Barb! My husband is coming home tomorrow for 10 days but he probibly won't be here to help with the move. At least I dont have to pack anything. Just clean the house, get rid of some old stuff and they'll take care of the rest. I'm int he middle of trying to decide if I'm gonna drive out there or sell my car and fly. It would be so hard to have a 3 y/o and a 2 month old in the car for 5 days but on the other hand I'm going to need a car asap. so who knows at this point. I'll post another blog when i have more info. :)

Hi Barb ,
Thank you so much for your care and kind words. Yes Lewis is being held back from graduating :*(. He said that he is classified "Broken", and his orders now are changed because with a broken finger he can not go to his sub. He is very disappointed, and sad because his orders were to go to Washington State and be on the SS Louisiana , his good friend he met through his training was going there to, but now Lewis will not be.Lewis has all in all ten weeks to heal, get physical therapy, and finish the last weeks of A school that he missed for his injury. I told him that maybe this was god's way of saying he was not suppose to go to Washington, maybe he is needed somewhere else. But all in all his spirits are ok, he will be ok he said, it is just all his buddies he trained with are moving on and Lewis is stuck in Groton. That makes him so sad, but he will be ok. Thank you!! How is your son doing? I hope well, I will be in touch soon, you take care!

Hi Barbara - thank you so much for posting on my blog - my son too is in subs (IT) and not sure yet where he'll attend A School. Of course I'll be posting once I find out. It is so great to be in contact with other Navy moms! Thanks again!
