Hi Kathy,
Did you have a great Thanksgiving with everyone home? We had a good time and now my mother and daughter have gone home and it is quiet here again. It was good to see both of them. My daughter said her husband is returning from Wisconsin on Dec 17 so she will get to spend some time with him again. She spent most of the time she was here working on papers for school. I will be so glad when she graduates in early June! I hate to see her so stressed all the time. But, I keep reminding myself, this is the life she has chosen and I can't make it any easier for her.
The letter Pete wrote for us to read on Thanksgiving was very nice. He sounds like a happy guy with a lot in his life to be thankful for. I am anxious to hear what they did to celebrate Thanksgiving on the boat. My husband read a book called Big Red that described a deployment on a Trident sub and in it they said they have a party with skits halfway through the trip. I don't know if they did that but it sounds like fun.
Hope all of you enjoyed Thanksgiving and now we have to start thinking about getting ready for Christmas. I have already started hearing the Christmas music on the radio and in the stores.
You must be getting ready to go to a basketball game soon at SNHU.
Take care, Lynn

Hi Kathy,
I know just what you mean about those phone calls when you wake them up. I could never be sure what schedule they were on. Does Adam have a roommate? Pete had one and the Navy was nice enough to be sure that roommates were on the same schedule. Pete told me some days they would come home and eat dinner at 7:00AM. They keep changing the schedule so they will not get used to only being able to function with a regular schedule.
My mother arrives from California tomorrow and it will be good to see her. Even though she is 84 she is still active and alert and knows just what is going on. In my pictures, she is the little lady in the purple dress.
Our daughter is coming home on Wednesday and leaving Friday morning. This is not a good time for a Harvard MBA student to be looking for a job. Her undergraduate degree is in civil engineering so maybe she can still get a job in that field. I know she will find something but I will sure feel much better when she does. I am just so glad that her husband has a good job.
I am glad to hear you ex-husband has schanged his ways. Now just hope he sticks to it. Sometimes it takes a good scare to get people to do what they should have been doing all along.
Take care and have a wonderful Thanksgiving,
Lynn

Hi Kathy,
We had a good week-end with my sister in law and my husband had a good birthday even without the bean hole beans. Pete sent him a large photograph of the sub from the air when it is surfacing and it is beautiful. Pete also sent him a USS Louisiana decal. He was very pleased with that.
I have always wondered what it would be like to have family close by. I know when the kids were young, I would have loved to be able to call my mother to take care of them when I needed to be at work. Your Dad sounds like a hot ticket. I cannot imagine getting old and just sitting around waiting to die. It sounds like he has a long ways to go.
We spent the day raking leaves again and now I feel like I am 80 years old myself. Sometimes it is such a relief to have the snow fly and then we can just sit back and watch the fun.
I saw a couple of articles in the paper about SNHU. I found out we know the director of student life and the head of security is a friend of mine also. They really have quite a few good programs there.
Well, I was hoping for an email from Pete but I guess I will have to wait for something really good to happen again. That is fine with me.
Take care, Lynn

That would be great if he and Adam could meet each other. I will let Brett know I've found someone close to Groton if he ever needs anything. You're a dear! Have a great weekend yourself, and will be in touch.

Hi Kathy, have not been on the site in a while, we've moved to Alabama (back home)! Brett found out yesterday he'll be stationed in Groton, CT and will be on the USS New Hampshire. He's thrilled. He will graduate from Proto-Type in December then be able to spend some time with us in Alabama before he heads to CT. You'll notice my e-mail address has changed, that's my work e-mail, I think I'm here more than I'm at home! Have a great weekend.

Hi Kathy,
I remember hearing them talk about standing watch all the time. Pete said they have all sorts of drills and make things go wrong to see how you will react and if you do the right thing. That is how they learn to not panic in a real emergency. Pete emailed us and said the inspectors came on the boat and did some serious drills in the engine room. When it was all over the captain called him in his state room and told him that the inspectors said he did a great job and gave him a commander's coin to show his appreciation. He was really pumped. Remember at OCS graduation they had those coins and then gave them to the drill instructors and other people. I think that is the whole idea with the coins. I am not sure if you wear them or keep them in your pocket or what you do with them after you get them. The captain said he was very good at making decisions and giving orders. My husband and I both claim he got the giving orders practice from listening to the other one of us.
You say your ex-husband is still smoking. A couple of my good friends, not too much older than I am, recently had strokes and both of them were long-time smokers. The older you get, the more you have to protect your health. It is no fun getting older and being retired if you are too sick to do anything. We talk about that all the time and how poor health would ruin all the fun around here.
Have a good week-end. My husband's sister from PA is coming to visit for his birthday and that will be fun. Maybe I can get her to dig the hole and make the fire for the beans.
Take care, Lynn

Hi Kathy,
How did the birthday party go? I am sure it was a lot of fun. We have the same tradition in our house. On your birthday I fix whatever you want. EXCEPT, my husband, whose birthday is Nov. 17 and asks for bean hole beans every year. That is where I am supposed to go outside and dig a hole, make a big fire, let it burn down, then put the beans in (in a pot) and leave them for hours to cook. One year Pete actually dug the hole but we didn't get any farther than that. I am tempted to go out and buy some already made beans and then just put them in the ground but I don't think that would fool him. My husband should have been born about 100 years ago. So, I always make him come up with a second choice.
This year there will only be four of us for Thanksgiving. All my family lives in CA and all my husband's family lives in PA. My mother is flying out here but it will just be the three of us and my daughter. Her husband is in a management training program for GE and is in Milwaukee right now. I don't think they can afford for him to fly home. In the past his entire family has joined us for Thanksgiving but his parents recently split up after 35+ years so they won't even be here. We will still have a good time.
Pete's boat surfaced near Hawaii on Sunday and we got a phone call. That was a surprise! He sounded great and said everything is going well. He has been working out and trying to stay in good shape because they feed you pretty well on the boat. They are getting ready for a big inspection. He still has a good attitude.
Does Adam know when he will find out what boat he is assigned to? Why does he think he will end up in Guam? I don't know of any of Pete's friends who did but that doesn't mean anything.
Talk to you soon,
Lynn

Hi Kathy,
I am so glad the election is over. As usual, many of my favorites did not win but we all just go forward and hope for the best. I wonder if the new administration will have any impact on our sons in the military. I guess we'll see. I am just thrilled that I won't get any more junk phone calls. We were up to about 4 or 5 a day.
I really feel it is a mixed blessing when your children leave home. I found teen agers to be difficult and I got soooo tired of all the arguments and hassles that went along with that age group. I guess we were pretty strict parents and so there was plenty of controversy. Now, I think our kids understand a little more why we did some of the things we did and we are much better friends. It is wonderful to see them and I am always sad when they leave. But, we try to give them wings so that they can fly and become independent. We have pretty much been alone since about 2002 so we are used to our own routine now.
What are the plans for the birthday party this week-end? Do you usually go out or cook their favorite foods at home? What about Thanksgiving? Are you having a housefull of people for that? I love it when we all get together and laugh and eat. That is why Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.
We'll talk soon. Take care, Lynn

Hi Kathy,
Lucky you! You get to have both your sons home at once. As the kids get older, it seems harder and harder to pull that off. We only have two children and no grandchildren yet. Our daughter has to finish school and get a good job before they can think of kids.
Guess what ?!?! We got a letter from Pete. The return address was Pacific Ocean, Earth. One of the officers on the boat was let off because his wife is pregnant and having complications so he took mail with him and sent it when he got off the boat. Pete qualified as Engineering Officer of the Watch but I still think he has to go forward and qualify before he gets his dolphins. He says morale is high and things are going well. He gets pulled out of bed all the time for things since he is the junior officer.
We raked leaves today since it was nice and sunny. We have tons of leaves and it seems like an endless project. My husband wants to pretend he is Pete and keeps shouting "rig for dive" which is now one of Pete's responsibilities. It is always a laugh a minute around here.
Hope you had a good week-end. Talk soon.
Take care,Lynn

Hi Kathy,
We didn't get any snow out of this but there was plenty on the news about New York. Did Adam say how much they eventually got? As much as I love to ski, I am not really ready for winter yet. Our daughter, Allie, goes to Harvard Business School. She is due to graduate in June 2009. She is really working hard to keep up. Some of her classmates are former investment bankers or people who have already worked in the financial world. She is a civil engineer so this is a whole new area of study for her. This is not exactly the best time to get a well paying job in business. But, her husband has a good job so I am sure she will find something and they will be fine.
I rarely head toward RI but I do not live very far from SNHU. Maybe the next time you go to visit your son you could see us as part of your trip. It would be a lot of fun to get together. They had a lunch for the N4M people after the USS New Hampshire commissioning but we didn't go to that. The people I was with wanted to get home.
Pete said he gets vacation the end of February to early March. We will either go see him then or he will come home. If the skiing is good we might all meet somewhere. Pete does not sit around well so he needs to be able to fish or hike or snowboard or something. Still no email, we figured this our before he left.
Well, I hope all is well with you and you don't still hurt from your surgery.
Take care, Lynn
