I hate to here your situation. My son went in the Airforce right out of high school he got sick with bronchits and they said he had asthma. Which the doctors now say he does not have. Anyway they sent him home almost three months later. He had to sit in the Med unit for two months. As you know he has now just left two days ago for the Navy BK. It is his goal in life to be in the military. If this is what your son is truly inspiring he will find a way and that is to get well recover and try again. My Chris had to wait over a full year do testing of all kinds for asthma go from doctor to doctor to clear his medical issue. Working as a waiter. I just pray daily that those doctors are right. I have not gotten a phone call yet like all the others have when they arrive. I sure hope he got to the base ok. I am continuing to pray for his success and health daily. I wish you and your son the best of luck.
THE STORY: Jacob cut is pinky finger in June with a pocket knife that had it's lock fail. The knife closed on the side of the middle knuckle. Well, after he wrapped it in toilet paper and continued to fish and then sleep (he was camping) he came home the next day. It was still bleeding! We saw the doctor who sent us to a Hand Plastic Surgeon. He had surgery the next day. He cut through the tendons and ligaments, down to the bone!!!! He has been in physical therapy since then. His first recruiter, (he has now been moved to another location, go figure) told us that it was NO PROBLEM!!!
So, two weeks prior to leaving for bootcamp, we get a letter in the mail from MEPS that he cannot go! We called the new recruiter who had to call his commander and the Medical chief is just following Navy rules. Anytime you have surgery you have to wait six months to enter bootcamp. Too bad the first recruiter wasn't up on Navy rules. We had a going away party planned and we had to have it anyway! So my kid is sitting at home, no job, and we almost sold his truck. He can go to boot camp in December. Who wants to go in December to Chicago!!! Then we find out his job training is full in December but they can get him in in February!! Right now, we don't know what he is going to do and neither does he! What a mess.
If he lets you, spend lots of time with him. The last day before Cristopher left, we went to the movies and to eat. We didn't talk about him leaving, just other things or nothing. I kept getting choked up (and I am now too) because thats something that him and I have done since he was about 4 years old. We just stopped about 3 years ago when I got married. So I had to think of all the times we went before when he was little. This website has helped me out so much. I would be absolutely lost without it. Good luck with yours!

Micah went to Fort Zumwalt West. Where did your son go?
My son is at boot camp now and graduates on July 3. He's 18 - he'll be 19 in August. He's done extremely well.
I wish I had known one thing when he left for boot camp: when they arrive, they are given a phone call home. And that phone call will be about 10 seconds long. Basically, they can call and say "I'm here" and that's about it. So, be prepared for that first call to be short and, probably blunt. And, if you haven't heard, about a week or so after that, you will receive a box of your son's personal belongings. It will look like he just peeled everything off & tossed it directly into that box in a hurry. Most of us said it looked like our son/daughter had evaporated & left behind their clothes! :-)
Well, anyway, this site is the place to be for filling those gaps when you are waiting for news. Keep your eyes peeled for someone (maybe you) to start a group for your son's specific graduation date - and maybe one for his Division and Ship Number (he'll mail you that info around the same time that box is shipping out). Those groups are a great way to share news since the phone calls and few and far between, and the time given for calls is brief. We've been able to find out lots of news from each other by sharing what we've learned from our kids since each recruit will talk about different things when they call home.
Take care - and best of luck to your son in the Navy.

Thanks so much for your note, Kelly! I am wondering if I got the date wrong. I thought it was Sept. 12 for Ricky. Is Jacob going to Great Lakes? Yes, we have sooo much in common. I would love to keep in touch. Teri
