About me:
I have lived in a suburb of Houston for 32 years, but was raised in Rhode Island. I am an interior designer and work part time at Coldwater Creek for fun AND the discount!! Michael is our only child, so it was a big decision for everyone when he decided to go in the Navy.
My child's FIRST name only (No Last Names Please!):
Michael
My son/daughter is:
Enlisted
I was the proudest of my child when:
I learned from his recruiter that he set the record for the Southwest area with his score on the Nuclear Power Test!
When my son/daughter first spoke about joining the service I:
Was concerned or afraid, Needed to learn more about it, Said “No way!”
As a new Navy mom, the most important thing I learned was:
I need to support his decision because, after all, it's his life and his choice. He delay enlisted in November, 2007 (while he was still in high school) and leaves on August 14, 2008 for Boot Camp.
My son/daughter is currently in the service or retired, and now I believe:
This was a maturing experience, The Navy has a lot to offer, This was the best decision he/she could have made

Hi, Denise -
I was just thinking of you and wanted to say "Hi". August 14th is getting closer - how are you holding up? Is Michael getting excited? My son, Jim, said that he'd be glad to talk to him on the phone and answer any questions for him, if he's interested.
Jim is having the time of his life now that he's in "A" school. He'll be 19 tomorrow! He likes his school, did well on the first test last week and is eating crab every chance he gets (no fresh seafood here in Chattanooga!) He goes to school in the mornings and only has duty one day out of every four, from what I understand. Other than that, he's got freedom in the evenings. They have to study - sometimes a mandatory study hall - and keep up with their PT (physical training), but way more freedom than boot camp.
It is so much easier having him away now that we can talk on the phone and send e-mails.
Hope everything is going well for y'all! Ellen

DEP advice - take lots of pics of your boy, make sure he sees all the relatives, have lots of laughs, good food & good times before he goes. also prepare yourself - he's not coming home to live with you anymore. He's grown up now and off on his own. I had a really hard time with that part. Anyway...

I was a DEP mom too. Advice - take lots of pics now before he leaves, write lots of letters & send lots of cards, etc., boot camp is hell - both on the recruit and mom. Beware - recruiting officers are not much use after your recruit leaves town. For emergencies - like a death in the family, etc. - the Red Cross is your contact, for less important things - contact the ombudsmans office. Info's on the web. After boot, things relax a little for mom. Thank you for allowing your son to do us the honor of serving our great country!! We're all here for you through every step of the way - good, bad or ugly - we'll always support you and Michael.
Love, hugs & prayers from Hoston (East Side)

Hey!! :) not a "true" empty nester. I still have one son at home who's 8 but without my sailor around it sure is different. Looks like you're new to the site - it's a great place to know your not alone in any of your trials. There's always at least one who's "been there - done that". Karen Gallagher, Care Bear and Steve's mom are all good sources of info and support. You're going to love it here.

yes the navy is a diffrent type of language. It is hard to learn but we are here to help you and your sailor.
I did read what you wrote to Ellen what is it that you are concered with ? what is the medical issue that your son has? Does he have all of his waivers in order now before he goes there? that is what you want to be sure of with MEPS and the recruiting office if not he needs to disclose this info and get this done before he goes even if it requires him to wait to go

Hi, Denise -
I'm not quite sure I'm understanding ... do you want to e-mail me privately? If you do, we can become friends and then send private messages. Or are you talking about e-mailing Great Lakes? But your son isn't there yet, is he? Help, I'm all confused!! I'm happy to help you if I can, though.....Ellen

Dear Momma Posey:
Hello and Welcome to N4M’s!
My name is Catherine the Admin and I’m glad you’ve joined us. As you start exploring you will see a great amount of chatter (IE: knowledge, support, advice, etc.) on our site (in our blogs, forums, and videos.) Before you add your point of view (POV) or ask questions, I want to share some ground rules with you. Here they are:
1) Please show respect at all times for all who belong to this community. (I like to say- Keep it civil… and everybody love everybody!)
2) For security, please do not reveal the current location of your Sailor or Officer.
3) Remember that this community is public, so anything you post (about yourself, your child or someone else) can be seen by anyone.
4) This site is moderated, so inappropriate content will be removed, like anything vulgar, hateful, violent, racist or otherwise obnoxious or illegal.
5) We may remove anything deemed inappropriate or inaccurate.
6) Members who solicit, advertise products, spam or flood on this site will be asked to walk the plank. Seriously.
7) DON'T SHOUT! Writing in capital letters means you're screaming in the digital world. That's not nice. So to emphasize a word, place *asterisks* on either side.
8) Let’s be tidy. Before beginning a new topic in the Forums, try searching at the top right of your screen to see if the subject has been addressed already. AKA- Be BEST friends with the search button!
9) Please don’t send the site's administrator (that’s me!) questions about the Navy. That’s what the Forums and your local recruiter are for. This site's administrators are NOT members of the U.S. Navy. They're here to keep the topics organized but cannot provide any Navy-related answers, nor can they respond to personal questions. (And trust me, Navy Moms answer quicker and better than I ever could)
10) Feel free to contact me with suggestions or comments about this site’s functionality.

Okay, so those are the house rules. Time to connect with other Navy moms!
I look forward to reading more about you!
Sincerely, Catherine
