Profile Information

About me:
My husband and I are teachers. We have 3 children and Michael is our oldest. Our other two children, who are ages 9 and 8, miss their big brother tremendously. We are a very busy family!
My child's FIRST name only (No Last Names Please!):
Mike
My son/daughter is:
Enlisted
I was the proudest of my child when:
he had such a hard time at Boot Camp and still persevered. He has always made me proud, but going through hell week with a fever and not giving up has been a very proud moment for me!
When my son/daughter first spoke about joining the service I:
Was concerned or afraid, Needed to learn more about it, Was proud
As a new Navy mom, the most important thing I learned was:
that holidays are when you are with the ones you love, not when everyone else celebrates!
My son/daughter is currently in the service or retired, and now I believe:
Our relationship has grown stronger, The Navy has a lot to offer, This was the best decision he/she could have made

It is such a relief to be able to communicate with my son on a daily basis. PM me with your son's last name. I will see if they know each other.

p.s. I understand the littles missing big bro, mine are 10 and 12. Though when he left, the first thing they argued about was who got to keep his X-box! Older got that, while the youngest moved into his room. When they heard he was coming home on leave, they were ecstatic, then the youngest got really quiet. I asked him, "what's up buddy?" He said, "Mom, since Mark is coming back, do I have to give back my room? " I assured him he didn't. He had no problem sleeping for a couple of weeks in his old lower bunk in the other room, but the thought of completely losing his newly acquired space was a bit too much! Kids! They have had their wrestlefests and video game knock downs with him. They also took Big Bro to school as show and tell, their classmates couldn't believe there was a real live Sailor at school. (He wasn't in uniform) Friends keep asking when they are going to bring him back because they thought he was so cool. LOL

Hey Janis, absitively, posolutely! =) Sent 5 boxes to GL over 14 weeks time. You just don't need to use the customs forms. Use lots of tape. :) Happy Mailing.

It's been a houseful of sailor fun and listening to them laugh. Mike is our Mountain Dew guy for sure! They are all watching James Bond movie.

Hey Janis,
How was your trip home? I really hated leaving the Matt, reality hit that he really has moved on with his life. Hopefully we will talk to him more now that he is out of BC. Just wanted to say Hi! Hope you have a nice Thanksgiving. It was great seeing you!

I've gotten way too addicted to this site ( I have laundry and planning to do)....But make sure that you check our Karen Gallaghers page on the NUKE group....Phase 1 in GC...It gives you a really clear idea of where your son is headed and what he can expect. It is almost exactly what my son has told me over the last year or so

Hi Janis
OK, I'm new out here. I wrote you a message, clicked on something and your post and my response disappeared....(so if you have several posts from me ignore one)....Patrick was the most homesick immediately following PIR. He too was great while we were there, but when we left, it was particularly difficult for him. I think it took him about a month in SC before he started to settle in. He said that it was extra stress to always have to be thinking of who to salute...etc. Once he was able to wear civilian clothes on the weekends ( a month?) and get a car ( 3 months?) he seemed to settle into a grove. I remember telling him that my sister told me that my nephew sometimes cried when he would call from the academy the first year...He's a fighter pilot now and loving it...and that helped...to know that it was normal. You'll want to read Susie's last post on my page....also...I highly recommend "SKYPE" or yahoo messenger with a webcam...it feels so much more like a family visit when Patrick can see Henry ( the family beagle). Anyway, hope that helps...Happy Thanksgiving....
PS I'm a teacher as well. Patrick will be in Goosecreek until December 12, and doesn't have plans for Thanksgiving...But he does have a jeep and some friends. If your son needs someone to spend the day with, let me know, Pat is amazing and would be more than happy to take him with them....They'll probably go into Charleston. He's only 20, so he won't be drinking.

Can't wait to hear about your weekend and see pictures. We need to find a time between Thanksgiving and Christmas to get together. Let me know how the sailor is and what his schedule is. I thought about you all weekend.
