Hi Paula, just want to add my two cents....my son was in class 01-08, the first class in newport. He graduated in Nov of 2007. Just want you to know the first 4 weeks of OCS were some of the hardest in my life....but it does get so much better after that. It's amazing the transformation that happens while they are there. I know my son said he would go back and do it all over again in a heartbeat!! I wish I knew about this site when my son was there, it would have helped me be better prepared for it! Be strong, and you will also see as the weeks go by, the Navy only wants to make your daughter a better person...the self confidence they will walk away with is amazing!!! Hang in there! Kathy
Kathy,

Thank you. I thought I was so mentally prepared for her departure but I guess I'm not as tough as I thought.

I am looking forward to seeing the young woman who comes out the other side of this 12 weeks. The areas where I think she needs growth are in self-assurance and self-control. I expect big changes.

Best regards,
Paula
Oh, wow! She just called. The call lasted about 45 seconds but she said she was making friends and the rule was "no one fails". They are encouraged to support one another and make sure no one gives up.

Oldest of 6? Goodness woman, how old is your youngest?

Ours are 23, 21, and 19. The two younger ones are in college.
Bo'sma and Paula...ya'll would probably enjoy the OCS Moms group
Hello- My Husband is in class 14-10. It will be a long week... our 5 year anniversary is on Thursday. This won't be the first one we have spent apart. We are (well I guess, were) stationed at Norfolk Naval Base in VA. He is (as was I) prior enlisted. He has served 7 years AD (active duty) as a submariner sonar tech. I hope he is adjusting well. Enlisted boot camp was not very hard if you could fold clothes, follow directions, take "drive- thru" showers and march in step. OCS is going to poise much more of a challenge, as it should. Best of luck to all of your LO's!

Stephanie
What was your rate? and how long were you in?
Hey all,
Check out the OCS moms group, there is a lot of information from more senior classes that you will find very helpful. My LO is in 11-10, welcome to the journey. Also, remember not to post last names on N4M.
Hi everyone!
My son starts OCS on March 7th. OCS moms group is a wealth of information and support.. check it out! I'm going to live there in the upcoming months! Our son is the middle of three boys, and 4th generation Navy. We are so excited and proud, and surprised that he chose to make this his career. He graduated from college this past May, married in August, expecting a honeymoon baby this May, so our heads are spinning. His wife will be staying with us while he is gone, and I will be taking his place at her birth. Nothing like these kids getting thrust into military life from the get go huh? Looking forward to getting to know you all.
My boyfriend begins on Sunday at OCS. I was wondering if you had any advice or information for me? I wondered about phone calls. When to expect to hear from them the first time and if you've heard anything after that. I hope all is going well.

-Libby
Libby-
The hardest thing for me is the -having NO communication! My LO-fiance live together and I am so used to just having the ability to call him whenever I need/see him at home, etc. With him being at OCS-it is NOT the case...I knew we wouldnt be able to really talk-but I wasn't prepared that we'd have NO communication. I write him EVERY single day...I start my letter in the morning, and just add onto it throughout the day...as if Im calling him to tell him about my day. Dont get upset if you dont get phone calls/letters...I've written to my LO many times say-I'd rather have him study/sleep at night than stay up and write me. Send news events/anything interesting...since they have been shut out of the outside world.

Since he's been gone, I got a phone call that first Sunday that lasted exactly 1 minute long..pretty much "I'm here, I'm alive", I received a text from him (not from his number..from someone else's phone) on my bday, and got my first letter Saturday. Other than that....there's been no talk between us. Stay busy...
Thank you so much for the information. I knew it would be limited. I am like you though, so connected all of the time when he is home. Let me know if anything else comes up that could be of help. I will try to stay as busy! Take care and thanks again.
Hi my daughter is in class 14-10 even though she has been in the Navy for 8 yrs this is the hardest time of both of our lives. She was fortuniate that when she left for OCS a friend that she was stationed with also went. Today I found out her friend has been rolled back due to illness. I have not heard from my daughter but was told she isn't doing well but is still hanging in there. I have been reading alot of info on here and feel a little better. But knowing the Hell my daughter is enduring it's going to be hard to sleep tonight.
