My son leaves for BC on Aug 23.  He graduated High School last Thur.  He has a lot of graduation money and its time for him to open his first account.  Which bank should we open up an account with?  Hometown bank would be great for now but what about when he leaves for BC or A school.  I don't even know if he can open an account with Navy Fed or USAA until he's in BC.  What say you?

Mine had an account with Bank of America through boot camp and when he got to A school, he changed to Navy Fed.  He really likes Navy Fed and of course there are branches and ATMs available at the bases.  Now,when he went to close out his BOA account, they were going to charge him extra fees for withdrawing his $ so he just swiped his card until there was nothing left and then closed the account.

I love this story. I switched to a local credit union from BofA and only wish I had done it sooner. Charging you to close your account??? That is absolutely crazy. I wish BofA would just go belly up!!  :-)

My son went with Navy Fed in bc last year and is very happy with them.

Bowflex....most open a NavyFed acct in boot camp.

Awesome!  Thank you for the information.

I would say USAA.  They are AMAZING!  Once he gets out of boot camp, I would suggest that he looks into switching over to them.  They give great rates, and he can also get all his insurance through them at really really good rates, and they even have a car purchasing program that is similar to the overseas car purchase program that the military has, only you aren't limited in the brand of car you're interested in.  Plus, because they're "member owned", even if you just have, say, your insurance through them, you get money back every year from their annual profits.

Plus, when the military was having their pay issues last spring (thanks to our government budget issues), and it was looking like the military wasn't going to get paid (in fact, one payday, we only got paid half, because the budget ran out mid way through the pay period, but thankfully, we got the rest shortly afterwards, when they signed the new continuation), USAA and Navy Fed both said that any military that had direct deposit with them, they would "honor" their "regular" pay deposits and basically "float them" the money until the government got their act together and gave them their back pay, so that none of them would have to worry about not having money for their bills, groceries, etc.

We've had Navy Fed since hubby joined the Navy in 1977.   While we now have a hometown credit union also, for convenience, we'd never give up our NFCU account.

WOW! A bank floating money to the troops, AWESOME!!  I've only heard good things about USAA and Navy Fed.  I think the USAA gets the nod though.  Thank you so much for your insight and information.

BFLA

Good question BowlexLA. My son graduates this weekend .He leaves for BC June 13. I had a powery of attorney sign so I could take care of any personal business that might come up. He has an account now with our home branch , but would like to know if they can have their pay go into their home bank and the Navy Credit union?

I don't think that they can choose both...make sure he takes his routing and acct # from his home bank. Many choose to open a Navy Federal Acct though

Thanks, JessicaB. I'll have him do that. It's really starting to get crazy, but I have been reading a lot on n4m site and this helps me a lot. Annexity is really setting in as the time gets closer. It's a happy and sad moment.

Thank you for your help. I'm sure I will be asking  a lot of questions or just to talk to someone, because as another mom has said, if you don't have a child in the military; you have no idea what I'm going through.
