My son starts ET A school at Great Lakes after his 1/28 PIR. He asked in a phone call for us to bring him his ipod, xbox, laptop to PIR, but I have heard several people say it sometimes takes a while before they can bring those things on base. I don't want to lug and pay for an additional suitcase on my plane trip for no reason. Does anyone know whether they can take them right away or not?

ProudGMBarb what ship is your grandson on?  My son is on the Decatur and he told me they got alot of new sailors just starting A school this week.

LoveOurSAILOR...Try not to worry. Our grandson, also ET and reported to A school, had liberty through Monday, but we needed to bring him back around noon on Monday to catch our flight home. I did not hear from him until early this evening when he called to give us his new temporary address. They are going through Indoctrination and are getting settled in their new barracks. You know the old saying...no news is good news. Hang in there!

LoveOurSailor, No it is not unusual to not hear from your sailor for a day or two. I bet he is being kept busy with Duty and Mustering. I hear from my sailor on Saturday or Friday's. Sometimes if he is not too busy studying for tests, he will call me on Skype.

They have very good medical care there at Great Lakes. Doctors are always available to help sailors who are ill.

Wanted to share a touching story. On Sunday morn, we had breakfast with our sailor at IHOP. When we went to pay our bill at the register, a waitress came up to us and said, "It's taken care of." We said, "What do you mean?" She said one of the other guests saw us and said he/she wanted to pay our bill as a "thank you" for our grandson's service. We asked who it was, but she said they didn't want to be identified. So we asked her to please thank them for us. OMG...we were so surprised, and deeply touched. We left the restaurant with tears in our eyes. My husband told our grandson how wonderful that was, and how different people are now as opposed to how they treated the service men/women who returned from VietNam. How thoughtful that anonymous person was!

ProudGMBarb. Welcome!!  Glad you joined us. I am laughing my head off at your comment about the Chicago weather. We are from Colorado and Chicago is too cold for me. I heard Chicago is very damp. In Colorado the weather is dry even when it snows.... My son's PIR was this past August so the weather was hot while we were there. I hear all the time from my son how cold it is in Great Lakes. LoL
