If its any consolation, the Laptop came in handy to use @ Ports/Liberty everytime.
In place of the cell phone.

We have AT&T and they called it a military suspension. I've always heard to get a throw away phone and buy minutes at the port they arrive to and add them to that phone. My son just used a calling card also.

that's what Verizion did.

Also, we do use AT&T and this last deployment, they didn't call it suspended. They actually cancelled his phone but they let us turn it back on with same number and the same plan.  I don't know if they still do that but lets hope they do:)

My son got his cut off so he could use his phone for his music. Like Denise said it's just way too expensive and most companies cut them off and let the contract continue.  I cut my son's back on when they pulled back into the United States.  And he also called from the ship and emailed from the ship.

They can use them on liberty, I think but we have always suspended our sons due to the fact that it seems no matter what the fees are or no matter what they claim to tell you, there is no way that any phone service can truly tell you what international fees are and it is very expensive from what I have been told. My son has always just used a calling card, called from the ship or just emailed. It's never been a problem. I know that is probably not what you want to hear and its just my opinion.  Someone else may have a better answer.

What about when they can in port and are able to use their phones?

well they can't have their phones on deployment they have to be cut off.  Not sure if that's what you're talking about.

Have a question for y'all ladies. I want to change cell phone carriers(we currently have at&t) can someone tell me which cell phone carrier is good for deployments such as roaming charges, good service, stuff like that?
