Group for Mom's of Gunners Mates in A School or on Duty

Members: 39

I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

Jennifer,I know how you feel.My son can't make it for Thanksgiving but he will be home for Christmas.I wrote him a note and asked him why he doesn't call us at all now that he is out of boot camp,I know he gets pretty busy but he does get on my space and write to his sisters,so I know he has a few minutes.But he wrote back and said " mom, you need to realize I'm a man now and this is my life and my job.You need to cut the umbilical cord and let me grow up.He was really sweet about it,but me being a mom I wrote back and told him-well I looked in my mom book and it don't say i have to stop missing you or let you completely go, just give you a little bit of room to grow.lol But i too miss him like crazy.I know I do need to let go but it is so hard when you can't see them or hear their voice ,and harder to admit they have grown up and started their own life.So,I feel for you and know how you feel.

Barb,Just got a computer note from my son last night.he too is coming in on the 19th and staying until January 3rd.He has already purchased his plane ticket,said it cost him $337 for a round trip that goes straight through. I know when he flew out for Boot Camp it took him an hour and a half to get there from here (N.Y.).I am so excited knowing he will be home for Christmas and to see the New Year in too.What a great Christmas gift,who could ask for more.

J from O: your sailor should get liberty during that weekend if in at least Phase 2, so long as he does not have a duty session. I am going up to cook a Thanksgiving meal, after my boys have duty done. I have a kitchen unit booked.I also may have a few friends of the boys coming too, as I hate the thought of anyone not being with family or friends. So I told my 2 to invite anyone who has no place to go. They also have a "Adopt a Sailor" program where those in the Chicago area invite sailors who cannot get home and no family coming in for Thanksgiving. Hope this helps....:0}

I think the holidays are going to be difficult for many of us... especially for those who have never spent a holiday without all of the kids at home. I was really worried about my sailor not being home, but he has informed me that he and his wife are looking forward to their first Thanksgiving together as a married couple and they are not at all sad about not being home. It does help me to feel better that he won't be feeling homesick. But, that doesn't mean I won't be missing him like CRAZY!

Stephen should be graduating from A school this Friday, but not sure yet when he will get to come home. He may be on hold at GL until sometime in December. So it looks like I won't have him home for Thanksgiving or Christmas but sometime in between. We will have to celebrate both holidays while he is home. I am beginning to become very anxious to see him. It seems like it has been so long. With him being stationed so far away, I am really going to have to start saving my pennies for travel. I hope everyone is doing well.

My son did say something about having time off at Thanksgiving. But I guess I wasn't paying much attention since I knew I wouldn't be able to see him. When he was on hold he did a lot of cleaning and moving furniture from office to office, busy work really. Not sure "enjoy" is the word he would use. He did learn a lot he said and he thought it was pretty easy. ATT is much harder. He is going to class every day and attends the open study session as well.

I know the boys won't have leave for Thanksgiving. I was just wondering if they will have a day pass? We could easily go there if he was off for the day. MMMMM if anyone hears anything from your sailor about Thanksgiving day please let me know. So Barb, what do they do during the week they are on hold? Did he enjoy Indoc and Basic Seamanship? Thanks again for the info ladies this site is wonderful.

Barb,Glad you wrote with that info.Thanks.My son has been in holding for about a week or so and just moved to his room where he will be staying with 2 other guys.He also told me that he will not be home for Thanksgiving.But if they get 2 weeks at Christmas that would be so nice.I also live in Central New York.I live about 20 miles from Syracuse in the country-little town called Pennellville,was a 13 hour drive for us at PIR.We got snow last night and continuing-Oswego County.Again,thanks for the info.

My son is in ATT right now. There is a hold of a week or so between each part of training. Be prepared too, my son has moved three times already. The chances of getting leave at Thanksgiving are slim. My son is scheduled to come home 12/19. I do believe that everyone at GL will get 2 weeks at Christmas. I wish I lived only 300 miles from GL!!! We are a 14 hour drive from central NY.

My son's PIR was Friday 11-14. We just returned home. What a wonderful weekend. Ok, ladies, what happens from here. He said he moves on Wednesday. I have seen on this site that his breakdown of training will be: A) Boot Camp (8 or so weeks)
B) Indoc (1 week)
C) SCC - Basic Seamanship (1 week)
D) ATT - Basic Electricity and Electronics (2-3 weeks)
E) GM A school (115 days)
F) GM C school (? # of days)

Will this start right away or is there a hold on all the training? What do you think his chances of being off on Thanksgiving will be? We are planning on going to GL if he doesn't get a pass. We live in southern IL so we are within 300 miles. Any information you can pass along will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
