Interior Communications Electrician

Interior Communications Electricians (ICs) install, maintain and repair the equipment needed for interior communications within ships and shore facilities. These communication systems include public address systems, interior telephone systems, alarm systems, engine telegraphs to communicate orders for changes in engine speed from the bridge (ship's command station) to the engine room, certain kinds of ship control and equipment monitoring devices, the ship's gyrocompass, the rudder position indicator, audio-visual equipment for the ship's TV entertainment systems, advanced navigation and various other equipment.

The duties performed by IC's include:

Maintaining and repairing interior communications systems;
Preparing and interpreting blueprints, wiring diagrams and sketches;
Installing and inspecting dry cell and storage batteries;
Recharging wet cell batteries;
Testing interior communications and gyrocompass equipment;
Installing telephone and other communications circuits, boxes, switchboards and bell buzzer systems;
Maintaining plotters and dead reckoning equipment;
Maintaining and operating TV systems;

Working Environment :

People in the IC rating work in many different situations, at sea and ashore. While most of their work is performed indoors, it may be in a clean or dirty environment of a shop-like nature, and it may be in any kind of climate or temperature. IC's usually work closely with others. Most systems IC's work on is of the modern solid state electronic type, making the rating a very technical profession.

A-School (Job School) Information

Great Lakes, IL -- 10 weeks

Some Interior Communications Electricians who graduate from "A" school go on to advanced training courses such as gyrocompass and advanced TV maintenance. Others are assigned to duty stations where they can continue learning their rating through on-the-job training.

I'm sure you all share pride with me in your Sailors now and this coming Veterans Day. My daughter Brook is in GL stationed at the base. She is IC. She will be there till after her baby boy is born in January. She is married to a wonderful sailor, Tim, who is a gunners mate. He will be shipping to another base soon for hand to hand combat training, then off to Iraq. I'm sure the holidays will be rough but they will be fine. Please share with your sailors my pride in them for giving what they are to our country. Give them all your love and support. My prayers will be with them all and please keep Brook, Tim and the baby in your prayers also. I appreciate it. Love and pride to you and yours. Jan Brook's mom

Hi All,
I hope all your sailors are doing well. Some of you have sailors in bootcamp, A-School, C-School or out in the fleet. Please post a message when you have time and share with the group about your sailor.
Billy finished his last C-School at the end of Sept. and then took a couple weeks of leave to AZ to visit with family and friends while waiting for his ship the USS Howard to return from deployment. This ship is back in San Diego now and Billy has reported for duty and is excited to work on all the equipment he's spent the last 14 months training for.

Jennifer, welcome to our IC group and thank you for posting your message. Just above the comment area on this group page is some general information about the IC's and what their job is in the Navy. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have in addition to this. My son just completed his 4th C-School (advanced training for specific equipment) in San Diego. He is on hold right now waiting for his ship to return from deployment. He is very anxious to report to his ship and get busy doing what he's been trained for duing the past 14 months. I was also a Navy wife and it does seem so much more different when it's your son or daughter who is serving. Good luck to your son while he is in the DEP. When you have time, please keep us posted on how he is doing. And again, let us know if we can give you any helpful information.

Hey there, my name is Jennifer. My son Casey has been in DEP for 2 months now and is due to go in as an IC next August. Although I have been a Navy wife for 18 yrs and am former Active Navy, I am most familar with the aviation side and not familar with ICs at all. He decided on IC because it seemed like a good compromise to the CTR that he really wanted and was a two year wait. Casey is a senior in high school right now, but if I can give him a good idea of what to expect, I think that will help prepare him for next fall.
My husband is a Navy Chief Petty Officer stationed at NAS Lemoore, CA.

My Son is an ICFN on the Ship that just left New Orleans yesterday...he's on the USS New York LPD 21! He is also the one everyone has been so worried over. He was robbed and shot Saturday night and had everything to his name taken from him. Any of the rest of you from that same ship?
