Hello Everyone, I started an USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41) Family and Friends group since there wasn't one! Come join me if your loved one is on USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41) or if you just want to support them

Jenny, I think it's wonderful what you and your sister are doing. I know my family eats a lot but I can't imagine how much food I would have to have to feed 20 Marines :) I am really hoping Alex decides to come home. I'm going to tell him if he could somehow find a way to get home with someone, I don't mind feeding a couple more sailors.

Winavymom, 5 1/2 years? I don't know how you do it. But you're right, I'm sure I miss him more than he misses me (or at least he would never admit it.)

my sister has been married to a marine for the past 3 years. the base down by her in north carolina has a program where residents of north carolina can sign up to host thanskgiving at their house for marines to go and have a nice dinner. my sister signed up for it and this thanksgiving will be her 4th year doing it. every year she has had from 3-10 marines at her house. this year, my husband and i are going to drive to her house and help her host it this year. she's suppose to have upto 20 marines! my husband said that he heard of a program like this out here in norfolk but he doesn't know anything about it. if i hear anything, i will let you all know! if i was going to be home, i would invite all of your sailors over for a nice home cooked meal! :)

Julie and Sissi - Welcome to the site. My son is doing shore duty in Norfolk, and he says they always have a special dinner on Thanksgiving. It may not be Mom's great cooking, but it is pretty good. He was away from home at the holidays for 5 1/2 years (Japan), so I know how much you will miss them. But there are always plenty of others who will be around and things to do. Just tell them to check with others who will also be there. Somehow, I think we miss them more than they miss us!

Hi, Julie. It'll be my son's first holiday away from home too and I'm also having a hard time thinking of him without us and me without him. I was wondering too if anything special was going on for the holiday. My son's on the Kearsarge and might have come home if he didn't have duty on Saturday.

This is my son's first holiday away from home. I am having a hard time thinking of him without us. He tells me he will be ok that there will be others not going home. Does anyone know of any dinner/gatherings that will be on base? His ship is USS Jason Dunham.
