Martie - so far the Navy has not announced plans for female enlisted submariners.  For a couple of years now, there have been three female officers assigned to each crew of six of the largest submarines, four SSBNs and two SSGNs.  FYI - the SSBNs are Trident missile subs, and the SSGNs are converted Trident boats.  I have heard rumors that new construction Virginia class fast attacks (SSNs) are having berthing areas (living areas) redesigned to accommodate some female officers also.  Eventually, the goal is to include enlisted females, but that's a more difficult problem because of the numbers.  If our cultural mores were closer to Sweden or Australia, who have a larger number of females on board, it would be a lot simpler, but as long as separate bathroom, shower and sleeping areas are needed, it's a lot more difficult to include more than a few females in the crew.  So, at this point it's just a few officers on a few boats.

I had a visit from an old acquaintance that had served in the Navy many years ago.He brought me two copies of the Navy Times (since I am Navy now) regaled me of his adventures in service. He then proceeds to inform me subs are being retrofitted to accommodate female sailors-has anyone heard of this?

NavyMomLG congrats also to your sailor on advancement.  I too still am not totally clear on the letters and such,(so many acronyms) but my sailor sent me the patch with 2 chevrons to sew on to his dress whites blouse.  His title is now  MM2.  His E5 rating came with the reenlistment about a month ago.  He told me he did find out that he passed the E5 test the last 3 times he took it but there was just not openings for advancement with out reenlist. He was  excited the day the reenlist was final, his email  stated.....got to sit in the CO's chair and watch the planes take off and land.....   I think somewhere early on either BC or A school,  he set a goal, and as he told me this is my plan.

I will say again I  learned so much from the seasoned moms (and dads) on this site, and hope I can help others as much as I have been helped.  One thing I have always tried to do from BC on is  keep it positive  short notes, positive quotes, bible verses,  the good new from home, no complaining from me, and care packages after BC.  God Bless and I think this Memorial Day will have extra meaning to all of us.  Thank you to all who have served.  Have a great long weekend.

You must be so proud, Linda!! I've learned that none of us are ever guaranteed to get what we ask for, no matter how smart we think we are. ;)

volunteering for sub doesn't mean they will get sub, they might end up on a carrier.  But only sailors who volunteer for sub can get assigned to a sub.

My son is just reporting to his sub in Groton, CT this week.

Hi everyone, anyone up for a question? My son is contracted nuke, he's in RTC now, and I'm wondering roughly when we'll find out if he's going MM, EN or ET (and did I even remember the right acronyms? SO MANY lol) - is it early/mid/late boot camp?  Also, if he hadn't previously volunteered for sub, does he have the chance to do so while in boot? (I never really know what he'll do.)

Thanks so much for any insight,

That remains to be seen but I will do my best.  Thanks for the encouragement!
