Hi everyone.  Our son has received Cortramid East in July.  Can anyone tell me exactly how this works?  At this point, he's gotten little information.  We will be driving our son from Maryland to Norfolk, and we don't know what time our son will be checking in, etc.  Is check-in the same time for everyone?  In the morning?  A general timeline would be helpful.  Thanks so much!

i wonder the same thing, but it's hard to imagine there are specific check in times [like 8am - noon] 'cuz kids are flying in from all over & will be arriving at all different times.  Last year our dd arrived at Norfolk hours later than most others did.  It was a little frustrating 'cuz she didn't have "return flight" information when she left home.  We were told she was supposed to be coming home a certain day, but no time was given & date was not even for sure.  Turns out the ship was delayed, so her return date & flight had to be changed, etc but she couldn't contact us to let us know when to pick her up from airport until she was at an airport waiting for her flight.  We just had to be available!!  lol, or not...

What date was your son told it "starts" ??  Our son was told he is to fly out [for Norfolk] July 7th and is supposed to get his specific flight info this week.  He was told a return date of August 6th.

Hi Jn/Jf Mom.  I hate the uncertainty when I'm trying to plan things, but I know that is the way it goes with the military.  So you have 2 kids in NROTC?  That's is so great!

Our son was told July 7th start and August 6th finish also.  We have to be in the Norfolk area on July 6th for another event, so we decided it would be easiest to take him to the base ourselves.  We then wonder if it would be possible for him to get a flight home to Maryland in August so that we don't have to drive back out to Norfolk to get him.  That would be the best for us because it's a 4-hour drive in each direction.  The airport is only an hour from our house.  I don't want to make things complicated for him though.

Hi Hanksmom.  So does that mean the Navy decides whether he should drive or fly to Norfolk?  He could fly both ways if they decide that.  We were just planning to drive him TO Norfolk because we would already be in that area the day before.  I just sent my son a FB message, and he said he'd let me know details as soon as he gets them.  Well, doesn't he know that't not soon enought???? LOL.  ;-P

Did your son request West?  A friend our son's (who lives here in Southern MD and goes to VT with our son) requested West and got it.  I just assumed if you lived on this side of the country, you'd automatically get East.

Our son will be home in 2 weeks!  I cannot believe his freshman year is coming to an end.  It really flew by.

Hi, everyone!!

Yes, CronusMom, we have 2 kids in NROTC.  Both are at Marquette.  It really is great.

Have your son talk to someone in his unit about travel for Cortramid.  Our dd is flying out of IL for her summer cruise [not really a cruise cuz she's a nursing option] & then flying to Rhode Island at the end, cuz we'll be there for a family wedding at the time her cruise is over.  Her original flight was out of Peoria & back to Peoria, but they changed it for her so she could join us for wedding.  MU has a really great retired Navy guy that takes care of all the travel stuff for summer cruises, etc.  But every unit must have someone in charge of that, if he'll just ask who that someone is :}

It should be okay for him to ask for a flight home after Cortramid rather than you guys having to pick him up.  They should pay for travel expenses either way [so keep track of your mileage.]  If he hasn't told them you plan to deliver him, i'll bet the unit is planning for him to fly both ways.

Exciting times!!

Thanks for the info Jn/JF Mom!  Glad to know that travel arrangements are flexible in that way.  Very exciting freshman year and very exciting summer ahead!!
Our son did CORTRAMID east last year. We are also in Maryland, and thought we might drive him, but he said it was so much better for him to fly. For one thing, he didn't want to stand out. LOTS of mids descend on the airport at the same time, they are all bussed to the base, and everything is taken care of for them. He did not get his exact travel orders until about a week before his cruise. They were not exactly the most logical way for him to go, but we were able to quickly adjust them through his school's unit office, and it all worked out fine. I hope this helps!
Yes, Kay, it helps.  I can understand not wanting to show up with mommy and daddy -- haha.  I had not thought of that, but I can see him feeling that way.

My daughter is supposed to go to East in July and we haven't recieved anything yet.  Have you all gotten orders/travel information/anything? yet?

Hi Ely.  We have not received anything yet.

Moms - very little info is given in advance. Things change from day to day.  Nothing definite till final orders are received.  Some how things just work out. My son left NJ for San Diego. Had a few days to sight see then boarded USS Ronald Regan to Singapore.  It was a great experience for him.  We have to remember they are all grown up and can do for themselves.  Just remember no news is good news.

Our ds came home from his Unit with his travel arrangements for Cortramid East.  I'm sure they are subject to change, but as for now he has his.
