Mary, what is the FPO AP? I thought it would be the zip code where my son gets his mail, but it is different.

Mary, do you know if the same type of thing happens around Christmas? My son will be out for Thanksgiving, but this would be good info if it happens at Christmas time also.

Congrats Kathy! A positive phone call is the best thing you can receive during Boot Camp. Your baby will definitely act more like a man next time you see him.

landlockedmom, what is your son studying? My son is on a sub, the Olympia. I am sure my son would be happy to meet your son if/when he gets to Hawaii. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you. Would like to meet you sometime.

I don't think you can specify what branch of the military it is. There are sailors serving overseas also. It looks like all of the cards were drawn by kids. I could not find a perfect card but there were several that I liked.

Thanks for posting this site Kimmy. I will post it on my FaceBook page also, hoping a lot of other people will use it.

Janice - There are a bunch of antique shops (that I did not get to see!) and there is the historic Mystic Seaport. There are a lot of Tall Ships at the port and it is just a beautiful place. Mystic is also famous for the Movie "Mystic Pizza" which...

Don't hold on to the guilt over missing PIR. Parents often have to make difficult choices and we don't always like the choice we make. Ask your son about it and then focus on the closeness you have now. He knows you will always be there for him; n...

The shifts are equal in number of days. And it is a good idea to return a day early so they are not late if they run into problems with flights being late. This comes from experience!

You are welcome Janice. I had never been to the NE either! It is beautiful country. We rented a car and did visit the New Haven, Rhode Island and Massachusetts areas. Be sure to go to Mystic while there. It is a very beautiful and popular place. ...

Kate, You have done a wonderful and very rewarding thing by inviting Sailors who will be alone on PIR. When my son PIR'ed in December 2006, he had a buddy who's family was unable to attend. We invited him to come along with us for the 3 days we w...

Janice....I forgot to respond to the rest of your questions! My son flew out of Providence, RI to come home, but we flew into Hartford, CT to go to his Sub School graduation. It was cheaper for us to go to Hartford and approximately the same dista...

Welcome to the group Janice! When is his PIR? Yes, they do go on Stand Down (don't know if that is what they call it in A school) for the holidays. My son's PIR date was 12/8/06. He left for Groton a few days later and was able to come home the w...

Congrats landlockedmom! PIR is truly an unforgettably proud day. Yes, my son is still in Hawaii and will be for a couple more years. Any particular reason you ask?

Thanks for the info Pat; I did not know that for sure either.

It may depend on how many openings there are in a position also. My son graduated 3rd in his class and to my knowledge "C" school was never mentioned. (Maybe it does not exist for his position, never thought about that! He is a NavET.

Profile Information

About me:
I am the proud mom of a Navy Submariner stationed at Pearl Harbor on the USS Olympia. I have been married to my soul mate for 28 years and have 1 younger son also. Originally from Southern Louisiana, we moved to OK the day after the wedding, then moved to Lafayette, LA where my sailor was born. My younger son was born in Tulsa, OK and is now going to college for film editing. I love music of almost any kind, playing computer games, reading and making new online friends.
I am here to support or represent my:
Son/Daughter
Stage of (Sailor’s) Navy Career?
Enlisted
When I heard “Navy,” I:
Was proud and encouraged it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
You have to let go and let your child make their decision. Make sure they research carefully but encourage and support them in their decision. Life goes on as children grow up. You can not believe how proud you will be of your child when they graduate boot camp. The 8 weeks at boot camp brings about wonderful changes.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Rhonda: Our son is stationed at Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Crommelin. We went out 3 years ago for an anniversary trip (b/4 our son was stationed there) and the flight was long from Atlanta. We flew Delta under a friend who is a pilot, and got first class, so that was wonderful. When you board (I'm assuming that you booked coach) tell them your medical condition and if there is a seat in first class, they may move you there!!! Have an excellent time in HI...we're headed back to see our sailor in December!!! ALOHA

Hello Rhonda8881 my son is on the USS Cheyenne out of Pearl Harbor, Hi. He's seem to be having a great time. Lots of hard work but on his time off he goes out with the guys to surf or airsoft. He said he went to a club also. He will soon have his car so he will be able to see more of the island. Glad to hear you'll be out there next year. :)
