Thanks for the answer Lynn. That's kind of what I had figured out. If it were closer to the ship date, they might drop her from DEP, make her heal and then make her re-enlist. Luckily there is plenty of time to heal up and get back in shape. She h...

Hi ladies... a little setback in my daughter's journey to the Navy, and I hope it doesn't mess any of her plans up. In our last volleyball game someone came down really hard on her foot and broke a bone in the top of it. She's going to be in a wal...

Hi, I kind of got an answer to my question from one of my rescue swimmer moms. She said that all special op guys go into 800 divisions, but females don't. Female's still wake up an hour early though to work out with the special ops guys. The 800 d...

My daughter leaves July 7 for bootcamp. But that might change when she gets her rating changed for AW. So who knows, I might have to leave this group and head to a different month lol Glad to meet you all

Hi ladies, anyone here have a daughter who is going through rescue swimmer training or maybe you know of someone with a daughter who went through it? It's easy to find mother's of sons who want to be rescue swimmers, but not a lot of females. If a...

Angie F: question about your answer to the question of females in 800 divisions. I thought the 800 divisions were for all recruits going into any special ops so that they can receive extra PT time in the pool and running in the mornings and evenin...

Congrats Chris! I can understand how proud you must be, it's just a shame that you can't be there, I read how much it seemed you were looking forward to it. Greg has been on a long, hard road and now all that hard work is paying off. That is incre...

Actually, they don't have to rerate to become a rescue swimmer. Each ship is supposed to have 2 certified rescue swimmers on board. So, some sailors keep their rating and jobs and sign up to go to rescue swimmer school to be one of the 2 on board ...

So Beachmomma... your son is already in the Navy and is going to be a rescue swimmer on top of the rate he already has? What rate is he? Or is he going to try to rerate to AW?

Born and raised Southern California girl... never lived anywhere else. Married to my firefighter husband for 24 years now. We have 3 absolutely wonderful daughers, oldest is getting married in December, middle is a junior in college, and youngest is the daughter who has enrolled in DEP and plans to be an AW rescue swimmer. Before working for my church I was a high school science teacher for 17 years. I love my country and my God and I'm super proud of my daughter and any of my students who have chosen to serve their country in the service. God bless them all!

Yes. My daughter is leaving that day. She is a GM (gunners mate). She is very nervous/excited about it. How is your daughter handling it?

Hello, thanks for your invite! My son is in Boot Camp as we speak - he got his contract exactly one year ago.....summer before his Senior year. His Senior year was very busy - along with the usual activites - he was on the Swim Team and very involved with the Dep program. He went every month to the YMCA to get retested because after they qualify and sign their contract they have to requalify every month. Around the beginning of this year, he started going every week to YMCA - they have Seal motivators there that work with them. It's been and long process to get to this point and I'm very proud of your daughter for having this plan. My son also had a plan and you have to have a plan to realize your goals, right? Ask away if you have any questions, I know I'll be here for quite awhile! ~Kerry

Greg turns 31 on Thursday so he's been away from home many times. He had 4 years of college during which he spent 6 months in England and visited France and Italy. then he went to Taiwan for nearly 2 years to teach English. He was able to visit Japan, Hong Kong and Thailand. Whe he came home he said he'd stay home a year and then he'd be gone again, but the year truned into 2 and then 3 and he found he couldn't survive on a swim coach's salary so he fulfilled a dream he'd had since high school and joined the Navy. SO we're used to him being gone. Well, sort of....you miss them terribly no matter how old they are.

He's in San Diego now. He got married last New Year's Eve and his wife is finally there with him. We used to talk to him several times a week but less since Jill got there, he's too busy being a married man (and that's fine with us, that's the way it should be).

I don't think it will hurt Kelsey's chances, not being a competetive swimmer. As long as she can fulfill the requirements the Navy asks for thats all that counts. She should get a list from her recruiter (if she hasn't already) of what she'll need to do and work on it so that by the time she goes to boot camp she can kick butt. Greg got a personal trainer who worked with him on the push-ups and pull-ups and running and all that. It really helped, plus it kept him motivated.

My daughter-in-law (Greg's wife) is named Jill.

Greg has just started his "wet flights".......jumping out of helos into the ocean. This week he just got to go for a ride, no pressure, no testing, just for fun. He had an absolute ball. He says he can't believe they pay him for having so much fun. I really hope your daughter is able to reach this stage. It sounds as though she's really determined to make it. The better physical shape she's in the easier boot camp will be.

My husband Nick and I are very involved in high school sports. Until last year he ran the chain gang for the football games (18 years). He had to giv eit up finally because he got knocked over one too many times and scared the life out of the coach and AD. We go to all the volleyball games and d.i.l. Jill is a volleyball player (played for U Wisconsin). She's hoping to find a club team to play on now she's in San Diego. One of Greg and Jill's friends is the high school volleyball coach. We also are head timers for the swim team. Greg swam competitively since he was 7 so we went to a lot of swim meets for many years. I was an official for a long time but gave it up when I turned 60. I'm the Altar Guild Director at my church (Episcopal) and am on various committees (comes with the territory I guess). Greg is our "baby," we have 5 other kids, all married with kids of their own (we have 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild). We're really old! One grandson is in the Army stationed in S. Korea.

We moved from S. Cal (Culver City, down by Santa Monica) to Ashland ,Oregon 21 years ago.

Well, I just realized that I've met you already on the Rescue Swimmer Moms page and probably had a conversation with you (duh!)

Apple Valley! Many many (too many to mention) years ago I was an Air Force wife stationed at George Air Force Base (now long gone of course) so I knew Apple Valley well. Visited the Roy Rogers Museum many times. I guess it's all changed in the ensuing 40-something years (oh darn, now you'll have realized I'm an old lady).

Jill,

My son said that it will be NO PROBLEM shaving time off of her time while in BC, as the training will do it for her! LOL he said he shaved off 3 minutes off of a time he thought he'd NEVER beat!!! So no worries. Just tell her to be in the best physical shape she can get into. It's a really hard training, and really hard work. If she is determined, that's HALF the battle!!! Let me know if I can be of any help off the site as well. My private email is proudnavyparents@bresnan.net.
I will keep your daughter in my prayers.....I have prayed along with many of the kids who are now at the finish line!!! The Lord works in a huge way in these kids lives. BTW, if she stays the straight and narrow, it means a LOT to the instructors.....they really respect that a LOT . My son is not a partier, and still isn't. He can't believe that some of the guys would give up their career for a few beers. Keep in touch, ok? Kari
